**The Virtue of Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram**

The month of Muharram al-Haram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds great sanctity and virtue in the sight of Allah (SWT). Particularly, fasting on the **9th and 10th of Muharram** carries immense importance.
**Virtue of the 10th of Muharram (Yaum-e-Ashura)**
The 10th of Muharram is called **Yaum-e-Ashura** (Day of Ashura). On this day, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw Jews in Madinah fasting on this day, he said:
> **”We have more right to Musa (AS) than you.”** (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Thus, the Prophet ﷺ himself fasted on this day and encouraged Muslims to do the same.
**Why is Fasting on the 9th Important?**
The Prophet ﷺ declared:
> **”If I remain alive till next year, I will also fast on the 9th of Muharram.”** (Sahih Muslim)
To distinguish Islamic practice from Jewish tradition, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized fasting on **both the 9th and 10th of Muharram**.
**Rewards and Benefits**
– **Forgiveness of One Year’s Sins:**
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
> **”I hope from Allah that fasting on Ashura (10th Muharram) will atone for the sins of the past year.”** (Sahih Muslim)
– **Following the Prophets’ Tradition:**
This fast is a practice of Prophet Musa (AS), Prophet Nuh (Noah, AS), and other prophets.
– **Allah’s Special Mercy:**
On this day, Allah (SWT) bestows special mercy upon His servants.
**How to Observe These Fasts?**
1. **Fasting only on the 10th** (permissible but resembles Jewish practice).
2. **Fasting on both the 9th and 10th** (best method).
3. **Fasting on the 10th and 11th** (if unable to fast on the 9th).
**Important Notes:**
– Fasting is the only Sunnah practice for this day; no specific rituals or customs are prescribed.
– Avoid mourning ceremonies and false rituals, as they are religious innovations (bid’ah).
May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to fast and perform righteous deeds during these blessed days of Muharram. Ameen!
